What is planned in this collaboration?
Our scientific vision is to visualize the progress of biological reactions with several time-resolved data collection strategies. We want to track reactions and determine the structures of reaction intermediates in extremely fast reactions (in the sub-millisecond regime) providing a routine, high-throughput alternative to spectroscopy based kinetic techniques. Time-resolved SAXS/SANS has cardinal advantages compared to kinetic spectroscopic techniques: It is completely label-free, it does not require isotope replacement, chemical modification or mutagenesis to introduce fluorophores or chromophores. Moreover it will provide global structural information about the reactants, which is especially important for the visualization of large scale structural dynamics of macromolecular complexes. In this research program we will address the technical challenges that thus far prevented the widespread adoption of this extremely powerful tool for structural biology.
What is the Röngen Ångström Cluster?
The Röntgen-Ångström Cluster (RÅC) is a Swedish-German research collaboration in the fields of materials science and structural biology that aims to strengthen research at synchrotron and neutron radiation sources. Enabled by an agreement between the Swedish and German governments in 2009, the RÅC helps initiating and developing cooperative projects between research groups from Germany and Sweden in the above-named fields.
